Credit repair letters: Seeing your file
Legally you have a right to see your credit file at any time. For a small fee, you can request a copy. To get a copy, write to the credit reference agency, sending £2 and ensuring that you give the following details:
· your full name and address, including post code plus any other address/es used during the previous six years
· sole traders or people in a partnership should also give their business name and address because this information may be held separately..
Following is a typical example of a letter requesting a copy of your credit file:

I am writing under Section 158(1) of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. I would be grateful if you will send me a copy of my file. Enclosed is a (postal order/cheque) for £2.
I have lived at the above address for three years. Previously I lived at 256 The Street, Your Town, AB13 8GH.
Please respond within seven working days of you having received this letter.

Unless the agency requires further details in order to locate your file, it must send you a copy within seven working days of receiving your letter. Or the agency must tell you that it has no file.
If there is information on your file that you wish to have removed please note that only incorrect information can be removed. This is because prospective lenders need to know your full financial history.
If you think there is incorrect information on your credit file, write back to the credit reference agency within 28 days of having received your report, enclosing any evidence if possible.
